I read Nic Penrake’s earlier eBook How To Write A Great Short Film Script and enjoyed the chatty style and sharp analysis on writing for the format. This one goes one better for just a few pennies more, covering finance, production, directing and post.
Again majors heavily on the writing side of things, which was perhaps the most useful for me, but, just as importantly, gives us some striking – and entertaining – examples of how to avoid mistakes on-set.
It’s not an academic type book, it’s much more like a survivalist’s guide to making a good – OK, great – short film. And at just over 70 pages, it’s also really concise and easy to cut through in one session. It’s the kind of ebook I reckon I’ll go back to as a reference for certain things.
Useful and informative. A lot of 'gotchas'. Really valuable for first time filmmakers seeking to avoid the common pitfalls of low budget short film making.
OK, I have to admit, I’m biased – I’m the author’s daughter. But I’m also a writer/director/editor and I found loads of useful tips in my dad’s eBook that he hasn’t even imparted to me verbally so far.
I like the chatty style, which keeps it moving along, a bit like Blake Snyder’s ‘Save The Cat’. I can honestly say that for $3.99 this one purchase will either save you hundreds of dollars or the equivalent in helping you raise the production value of your film. It's highly recommended for both beginners and experts.
What a great informative read . I am shooting a short film in two weeks and despite my many years in film production , this book is still a handy refresher . So for me it will appeal to film makers of all abilities , so download it now ! Phil T
